US online gambling expansion

30 April 2025

This week, we're updating you on 20 states as they look to regulate internet casino games, or make them illegal.

Online casino games, sports betting, and poker continue to expand across America. However, each state takes its own unique approach when it comes to gambling.

A friendly wager on a game may nice, but sports betting in Maryland may be changing in a bad way. Online sports betting there is facing a potential shutdown under a new bill introduced by Senator Joanne Benson. Filed on February 20, SB 1033 seeks to end mobile sports wagering in the state by January 1, 2026 — making it the second legislative attempt in the U.S. this year to dismantle an existing legal sports betting market.

Speaking of betting on sports, a majority of states here in America now allow the activity. However, there’s a new push for New York online gambling with casino games, and in states like Hawaii and Mississippi, there’s now a renewed interest in expanding sports betting to include online and mobile wagers as well.

First in New York, lawmakers are once again revisiting the issue, with State Senator Joseph Addabbo introducing a new bill to authorize and regulate online casino gaming. This marks Addabbo’s third attempt to pass such legislation. Plus, Pennsylvania online poker is has joined the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, paving the way for players there to compete directly with players in other states playing regulated web poker.
